Assistant Brand Marketing Manager, Daltile
My college internship definitely helped pave the way for my post-graduation career. For me, this internship started as a short, 10-week program the summer before my senior year at UT Dallas. Little did I know at the time that it would later evolve into my current position as an assistant brand marketing manager with the same company.
Even if events would have occurred differently — where perhaps I wouldn’t have received a full-time offer from the same company that I interned with — I am confident that the opportunities I was exposed to during my internship helped me broaden my knowledge and skill set towards any marketing job opportunities elsewhere.
I was fortunate enough to have been included in high-visibility projects, some of which involved our company’s executive team. Even just getting the chance to sit in on important meetings (where I initially had no idea what was being discussed) allowed me to listen and take in new information for me to learn. This also came with the introduction to a handful of new mentors along my journey.
And, no, I wasn’t just “the intern making coffee for everyone at the office” like you see in the movies. Although, I wouldn’t mind picking up a couple of Starbucks Coffee Travelers on my way to the office from time to time — especially after having worked my way through paying for college in the service industry and being in the habit of helping serve others. Plus, this meant that I would get a fresh cup of joe for myself too — so I saw it as a win-win.
